MERRILL’s capabilities are demonstrated by the production of AMTRAK High Speed Rail Locomotive Cars. MERRILL was awarded a $30 million contract to build 56 locomotive cars over the course of four (4) years. This required efficient work instructions and processes for moving the work through the production assembly weld fixtures. Each car included 1,200 pounds of weld, 15 different alloys, eight (8) different coatings, and eight (8) unique castings.

MERRILL’s in-house engineering team designed and developed several production weld fixtures and work processes to meet the production demand. Many of the fixtures developed have both manual and hydraulic clamping.

One of the many assembly operations is performed at a large rollover fixture where the floor/decking of the locomotive is welded in place. The welded component being produced is approximately 52 ft. in length.
